Course overview
Navigating Medical Tests, Procedures, and Induction: From Early Pregnancy to Immediate Postpartum
Course Description:
Whether you're preparing to give birth or supporting someone who is, understanding the medical side of pregnancy and birth can make a powerful difference. This training offers a clear, grounded look at the tests, procedures, and common interventions offered from early pregnancy through the immediate postpartum period.
Together, we’ll explore:
- What each test or procedure is looking for—and what happens with the results
- How to weigh risks, benefits, and alternatives for each individual
- What an induction is, why 39-week inductions are becoming common, and how they work
- The difference between elective and medically indicated induction
- How to take charge of your due date and make decisions that align with your values
We’ll also break down common interventions and screenings, including:
- Group B Strep (GBS)
- Membrane sweeping and Artificial Rupture of Membranes (AROM)
- Fetal monitoring (intermittent vs. continuous)
- Glucose testing and preeclampsia screening
- Ultrasounds and antenatal testing (Non-Stress Test and Amniotic Fluid Index)
- Standard newborn tests and procedures
This training is designed for both birthworkers and expectant parents who want to feel more informed, confident, and equipped to engage with medical care from a place of clarity and choice. We’ll center bodily autonomy, critical thinking, and trust in the process—while also navigating the reality of hospital systems and clinical norms.
